Oh the weather outside was frightful, but Casa Frela was so delightful! This weekend, Casa Frela hosted an art and gift festival called Made in Harlem. Artisans displayed their handcrafted jewelry, quilts, art, and more.
We had the opportunity to meet Lynn of AFineLyne. She informed us that the new Aloft hotel will be selling 3 of her postcards. We also spent some time chatting with the owner of Shimoda Accessories and Valerie Deas of That’s So Art and the Harlem Girls Quilting Circle. Ms. Deas showed us her gorgeous quilts and told us of her plans to focus on her story quilts and smaller pieces. She had a wonderful jazz lap quilt and one that features President Obama, Frederick Douglass, and other important African-American historical leaders. Laura Gadson, another member of the circle had an equally as attractive lap quilt of Billie Holiday. If you missed them at Casa Frela, you can see them next weekend at Harlem for the Holdays.
We discovered that Carolyn Johnson of Welcome to Harlem has published a traveler’s guide to Harlem. We must say that it is the most comprehensive guide that we have seen.
You can find more handcrafted gifts over the next two weekends at A Holiday “Affordable Gift Bazaar” at the Hamilton Landmark Galleries. The Bazaar will be held December 11-12 and 18-19 from noon to 6 PM. Admission is Free.
