Stickball & Salsa this weekend

Artist: Mark A. Hayden

An annual summer tradition in El Barrio for more than 41 years, this outdoor street event involves salsa music, dancing, stickball games, food, and a street fair.

Play: The stickball games are from 7:00 AM to 12:00 noon, then the street party kicks into gear from noon until 7:00 PM. Expect to find live bands, DJs, and vendor stands.

Eat: Food and beverages are sold from stands set up along the sidewalks of 111th Street. Neighborhood residents set up tables outside their buildings and sell Spanish food cooked upstairs in their apartments along with ice cold beverages.

Dance: People  dance anywhere they want. You’ll be dancing on pavement, so wear shoes that are smooth & slippery, or sneakers and keep your dancing simple.

The festival takes place on 111th Street between Lexington and Lenox Avenues.   The food area is on 111th Street between 5th & Madison Avenues, and the bands are on 111th Street between 5th & Lenox Avenues. The salsa dancing and stage area are set up in a huge playground of a neighborhood school, where restrooms are available (BYOTP!)

  1. I remember attending JHS 45 on 120th St and walking down to 111th St for stickball games. I talk about these events in my book Harlem Son. I will be signing books at the Harlem Book Fair at B. Oyama at 7th Ave and 137th St. 12noon-3pm
