Seen in Harlem: Project Runway

We kept hearing about Project Runway coming to Harlem to shoot an episode, but we didn’t get a chance to check the episode out until now.  Emilio Sosa, a Dominicano who grew up in the Bronx, but now seems to live uptown, chose the historic neighborhood as his inspiration for the weekly challenge on episode 7. Unfair advantage or not (spoiler alert) their team won the challenge!  As pictures of familiar 125th Street signs flashed in rapid succession, Emilio proclaimed, “Harlem is about churches, liquor stores, and fried chicken spots.”

Emilio and his team member quickly realized that Harlem fashion is mostly comprised of denim – from toddlers to grandmothers. The mosaic tile mural across from the Magic Johnson theater played a key role in fostering their idea for the night-look outfit that they were required to create. Emilio decided to the go the route of classic Harlem for the night outfit – styles from the 30s and 40s.
