Experience: Uptown

The only thing that could have made the concept of ‘Uptown’ better is if it was performed uptown. ‘Uptown’ is a modern ballet choreographed by Matthew Rushing, an 18 year veteran of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. The Alvin Ailey website describes ‘Uptown’ as taking “a vibrant tour through the Harlem Renaissance era in all its boisterous, swinging glory. In this new ballet legends like Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Josephine Baker and their contemporaries come alive to the music of Fats Waller, Nat “King” Cole and more.” The show uses the full company of 28 dancers (sans Mr. Rushing) and is set in familiar Harlem scenes like a busy street, a rent party, and a night at the Savoy ballroom.

‘Uptown’, reviewed by the Village Voice and featured in The New York Times,  runs through January 1st and makes an excellent Kwanzaa outing for family and friends visiting during the holidays.
