P A ‘L A N T E Means Moving Forward

PA'LANTE Harlem Team at their 'Cinco de Mayo' Culture Festival earlier this year

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, Pa’Lante Harlem is holding a special event: Building our CommUNITY, to celebrate its success over the past three years and honor four distinguished members of the community who have helped with the fight against landlord abuse and tenant exploitation.

Building our CommUNITY – Luncheon
Pa’Lante Harlem will present its 2009 Building Our CommUNITY awards to:

  • Rep. Charles B. Rangel, 15th Congressional District, Chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee
  • Tenant attorneys Robert Grimble, Esq., and Robin LoGuidice, Esq., of Grimble & LoGuidice, LLP
  • Abbott Ruskin, former assistant to State Assemblyman Herman D. Farrell, Jr.

Pa’lante is a Spanish word which means “moving forward”. The acronym itself stands for People Against Landlord Abuse & Tenant Exploitation.  It began as a group of tenant associations from 3 buildings www.uptownflavor.com/2007/05/17/slumlords-trying-to-blow-up-buildings that belonged to the same landlord. After suffering years of deplorable living conditions the tenants decided to ban together and take the landlord to court. After winning a major battle (which involved the city removing all management capabilities from the landlord and handing it to a third party manager charged with making the repairs) they started to get flooded with emails and phone calls from people all over Harlem, Washington Heights, and even the Bronx. Many tenants were going through struggles similar to theirs. They took it upon themselves to help the tenants organize and teach them some of the important lessons learned as they waged war against a slumlord. From there the organization known as P.A.’L.A.N.T.E. Harlem was born. They also had the support of our local elected officials.

So far they have organized tenants from over 15 buildings. Recently they received 501-c3 non-for-profit status. Their mission is to educate tenants on their rights. They also wish to hold free legal clinics and seminars. While other organizations wait for funding in order to hit the ground running they have been doing the work.

On Saturday November 14th, 2009 we will be having our first major event, the 2009 ‘Building Our CommUNITY’ luncheon celebrating our recent non-profit status as well as raising funds. The luncheon will take place at the beautiful River Room of Harlem at 12PM. They will also be honoring four individuals who have contributed to Harlem and the cause in a very special way. The honorees are Congressman Charles B. Rangel, tenant attorneys Robert Grimble and Robin LoGuidice, and former assistant to Assemblyman Herman D. Farrell, Abbot Ruskin. Tickets are $100.

Feel free to visit their website at www.palanteharlem.org for more information.
