The annual Puerto Rican Day Parade will be on Sunday, June 14th but everyone knows that the real partying takes place the day before. In addition to the annual 116th Festival, you can stop into local favorite Raggs to meet the renowned East Harlem abstract artist (and former professional tennis player) Ted Dimond.
Dimond pays homage to the land and culture of Puerto Rico with his oil paintings. Vieques, Culebra, Guanica, and Ponce, are among the vivid landscapes portrayed in his boldly colorful works that are displayed as a façade on the outside of Raggs Lounge located on the corner of 119th Street and Park Ave.
Mr. Dimond will paint a “political landscape” mural honoring past and present Latino cultural and political figures including Senator Olga Mendez, the late José “Chegui” Torres, and Supreme Court nominee Sonya Sotomayor at the event. One of Mr. Dimond’s paintings will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Randalls Island Sports Foundation, which provides athletic programs for youth throughout East Harlem, the South Bronx, and Randalls Island.
Music Artist Frankie Cutlass, World famous D.J. Venus, John Sean Supermodel Cecil Miller, New York One Wise guy Mark Green among others will be making appearances as well.
Raggs Lounge is located at 101-09 East 119th Street at the corner of Park Ave. The event is FREE.
