Last week, Ruben was at his usual spot under the shade of a tree, between a stoop and a garbage bin, talking trash and beating anybody foolish enough to play him. This stretch of East 142nd Street is like a different dimension, where anything can and does happen. A skeletal man in a raincoat walks by — at high noon on a blazingly sunny day — and before you know it, a few players shout out: “Hey! It’s Columbo!”
