Content Submission Guide

Content Qualifications

1. Content should be submitted on a regular basis and be free of excessive capitalization, spelling errors, punctuation errors, or grammatical errors (use the A.P. Style Guide as a reference.)

2. Content should focus on Harlem and the surrounding communities.

3. Content must not be defamatory in nature, contain pornography or excessive profanity and should not contain content that violates copyrights, trademarks or other legal rights of others.

Submission Requirements:

The following fields apply to all text-based submissions:

1. Headline should be a descriptive and precise title. Place the most important words and at the beginning of your headline. Please don’t use all caps in your headline!

2. Photos should be original or royalty free images that you have the right to use publicly.

3. Reviews should contain a disclosure statement (http://cmp.ly/Publish/user/howToDisclose.php)

4. Don’t over-promote. We welcome your genuine enthusiasm for the things you love, but if your content reads more like an advertisement or press release than thoughtful firsthand insight, it’s not for us. And although our platform is a great way to find an audience for your expertise and build your personal brand, we don’t publish content that is primarily intended to sell something, build backlinks, or drive traffic to other websites (including your own). Highly relevant links to personal websites are appropriate if, and only if, they add to the usefulness and authority of your content and do not come across as jarring self-promotion. Affiliate links (links that result in compensation to you or an affiliated party in the form of sales, clicks, memberships, visits, etc.) are prohibited. Never accept payment from a third party to publish on Uptownflavor.com.

Please use these guidelines to format the content you submit:

• Use single spaces between paragraphs.
• Use line breaks only at the end of paragraphs.
• All text should be left-justified.
• Limit use of bold and italicized words to section headers or highlighting of key points. Underlining should only be used for links.
• Avoid excessive capitalization. In general, only proper nouns, the first letter of each sentence, and acronyms should be capitalized. TEXT WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS (like that) is considered shouting on the Internet – use your inside voice.
• Place the headline of your article in the title field only.
• All images attached to an article must be relevant to the content, and abide by all of the image guidelines.

Compensation:

We are unable to compensate our writers at this time. Uptownflavor is site is a labor of love and not a commercial site.

Terms:

All rights are reserved by the author. Submissions must be original and you must own the copyright. Works are posted for an indefinite period of time. We commit to sticking with the original views and message of submissions, however we do reserve the right to edit work to better suit the format of the site. All work submitted is wholly owned by the author and as such, authors may request to have their submitted works removed from our site at any time. Contributors are expected to follow and adhere to the Society of Professional Journalists code of conduct and exhibit high levels of  journalistic integrity.

Specific guidelines for each discipline are as follows:

EDITORIAL WRITERS interested in submitting articles for a particular section should email their article or query to write4uptownflavor at gmail.com. All articles should be 400 words or less. All work is subject to editing for clarity and brevity.

Photographers and other VISUAL ARTISTS interested in submitting work to UPTOWNflavor should email their work, including a link to a representative web site or samples of their work as attachments. UPTOWNflavor does not publish explicit or nude work. When submitting static images, please compress no more than three sample images to 50kb or less. All images must be a .gif or .jpg. Even better is to submit photos directly to the flickr photo pool with uptownflavor as the tag. When emailing submissions, please type “electronic submissions” in the subject line.

Submissions received without the proper subject line may be deemed spam and discarded unopened. Images will be scanned for viruses before they are opened, and suspicious files will be discarded unopened.

MUSIC/FILM PUBLICISTS, PRODUCERS AND COLUMNISTS seeking to submit reviews to UPTOWNflavor should also forward their information to write4uptownflavor at gmail.com. Music reviews should not exceed 500 words in length. Please type “music/film submission” in the subject header. Preference will be given to projects that align with UPTOWNflavor’s demographic audience. Please do not submit work with excessive profanity.

Once material is submitted, writers have given UPTOWNflavor permission to immediately publish their work online. Our staff is dedicated to preserving the original viewpoint and message of all correspondence received, however all material is subject to review and editing by our online editors and may not appear on the site exactly as submitted.

*Please note that all contributing writers are expected to submit written content on a regular basis.
