Forgoing the wicked weather that has cast a wet blanket over the New York area for the past few days, Harlem’s theatre elite turned out in full force on Tuesday night to screen Jamal Joseph’s latest production.
Joseph, a respected professor at Columbia and a former Black Panther, worked in concert with New Heritage Films and Community Works to produce a short film that documents Harlem’s oft-overlooked theater history.
Showcasing 6 Harlem theater companies and 14 legacy-makers, Harlem is…Theater is a first step towards documenting what was fast becoming a lost history of Harlem’s past.
Joseph assures us that this is only the beginning and he plans to eventually extend the short piece to an hour-long documentary that gives a comprehensive history of Harlem’s revered past on and off the stage.
You can view Harlem is…Theater at the Dwyer Cultural Center located at 258 St. Nicholas Avenue, from April 10 through June 26.
