After feeling a bit disappointed by the tribute to the life and legacy of Michael Jackson on this week’s BET Awards, Harlemites were hungry for a chance to revel in the pop star’s musical legacy. Thousands of fans turned out in both rain and shine to stand in a line that snaked down 125th Street, then up Seventh Avenue, and finally wrapped around 127th Street. The spirit of the day was all about love and honor for the music and charity work that Jackson so generously gave during his lifetime.

Words were shared by Rev. Al Sharpton, Spike Lee, and Rep. Charlie Rangel. DJ’s from New York’s top R&B stations emceed the musical tribute. One of the highlights of the day was old school rapper Chubb Rock hyping the crowd into a frenzy.

A full report and a profile of some of the fans will be coming later, but here are some photos of  a few of the day’s best moments.  More to come in the coming days.
