Holman Gym at City College on W. 138th St. on Saturday, waiting to get into the Harlem Education Fair, which kicks off at 11 a.m.
Harlem has become a laboratory for parent choice, boasting 23 charter schools, 14 parochial schools and 16 private ones, along with 70 zoned public schools.
“In Harlem, you have more choices than almost any other place in the country,” says Eva Moskowitz, CEO of Harlem Success Charter Network, which runs four charter schools. “You’re actually getting to the point where choice has become real – and I think that’s a very, very good thing.”
Parents will be able to pick up brochures, meet principals and teachers, and shop for the school – public, private or charter – that best meets their needs.
Moskowitz isn’t trying to fill seats in her school: last year, 5,000 applicants entered a lottery to try to score one of 600 open seats at Harlem Success.
That level of interest will surely jump in the weeks ahead: Moskowitz says her third-graders recently took last year’s state math exam for practice and all 60 passed.
If that performance holds up on the real state exams scheduled for next week, Harlem Success will be an even hotter property among parents.
“It’s a civil rights issue,” says Williams. “Parents have the right to choose where their children are educated.”
