The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites available in East Harlem, gives low income individuals free tax preparation by IRS certified preparers.
Qualifications:
2008 income under $20,000 (individuals) or under $45,000 (families), under $5,000 in expenses (businesses)
People who think they qualify should call 917-671-1000 to make an appointment.
Additionally, anyone who has their taxes prepared at a VITA site is eligible for a $aveNYC account from the city of New York, which provides a 50% match on a refund deposit (up to $250). For example, if someone deposits $500 from his/her refund into a $aveNYC account and follows the correct guidelines, NYC will deposit $250 into the same account.
