A couple of years ago, (when we first starting blogging) we followed the very messy battle between Home Sweet Harlem and and their landlord, Well, it seems that HSH, has slipped off to the place where beloved Harlem businesses go, while Strawberry (previously on 7th Ave.), is reviving. Yet, as we know from past experience, it may or may not actually happen.
Here are the bare bones facts:
- Strawberry, which used to sit quite empty on 7th Avenue in the 130s, has vacated their old establishment (see picture on left).
- Home Sweet Harlem’s establishment is now vacant and a banner hangs outside that reads ‘Strawberry Coming Soon’ (picture on right).
I also noticed that the laundromat that was next door to HSH is also gone and has been replaced by a low-end nail salon.
Follow-up file: On a similar note, I’ve discovered the reason for Harlem Wing and Waffle‘s brief renovation period in October. As it turns out, they received an excessive 82 violation points from the health department! Eek!!! They seemed relatively clean when I used to go in there, but I haven’t been in there in over a year. They did clean up during their “renovation” period and have since reopened for business. Here’s hoping they can keep it clean.

Dinosaur BBQ
I moved here from Syracuse, and what I miss most (apart from Wegmans) is the Dinosaur BBQ. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is great fun, and the crowd mixes blue collar and business suits, elbow to elbow. (I keep a bottle of BBQ sauce for emergencies – who knew I’d need it to illustrate a blog post?)
So it was exciting to see All Over Albany’s report that Dinosaur BBQ may come to the Capital Region. Here’s more information from the Schenectady Daily Gazette. It sounds like they’re scouting sites, but haven’t yet announced a deal.
Dinosaur BBQ would be a perfect fit for Rensselaer! We’re just a quick hop over the river from Albany. We have access from both Rt. 90 and Rt. 787. And then there’s the new Amtrak station – don’t think that people won’t take a train trip for BBQ – the Dinosaur is a Destination!
The growing momentum of our downtown and waterfront redevelopment would mean Dinosaur BBQ could get in early on a really good thing, while the prices are still cheap. And they don’t seem averse to remodeling – even a warehouse, as they demonstrated in Harlem.

You know that every time a place closes it receives rave reviews about how good the place was. But when the place was open the was no word any where about how good the place is and we should patronize it.

@ Nicole: Every time I would go by there they were always empty. Even after they were under new management. Maybe the location just didn’t have enough foot traffic?

Strawberry had the best curry shrimp and their soups were on point too. I hope they do reopen soon.
