This weekend was exhausting for me. I spent all day Friday running around Manhattan for appointments, then I hit up the grand opening over at the brand new East Harlem Cafe. On my way back home I popped into an art opening at Tribal Spears. Continuing on my trek uptown I walked passed the Magic Johnson Theater and was instantly pulled in by the fiercest rhymes being delivered by female emcees. I turned on my heels and headed up the escalator of the Magic Johnson Theater where the Hip Hop Culture Center is housed. It was there that I found a room full of ladies with more swagger than Puff, delivering the hottest, tightest, rhymes in Harlem. When I say that I fell in love with hip hop again at that exact moment, I am not exaggerating (my Brown Sugar fans know what I mean.)
I stayed and watched the ladies rehearse for a while, wishing that I could come back the next day for the Impact of Women on Hip Hip Conference being hosted in what is essentially a shrine to the culture. While I wasn’t able to attend the conference on Saturday, James – the host of Harlem Hybrid, took some pictures of the event as part of his photo series. It looks like they had a great turn out! I look forward to attending more events at the Center in the future, including their financial literacy workshops each Thursday.
See more photos over on Harlem Hybrid.
