Friday Freestyle Flavor: Killing Rumors

Posted on September 12, 2008 by

When it comes to Harlem, all kinds of rumor tend to fly around.  Some of them pan out and others crash and burn.

Among the rumors that have panned out — the opening of a Starbucks on 145th, the opening of Nectar, and the closing of the Sugarhill Java and Tea Room.

Among the rumors that have crashed and burned have been — a Dallas BBQ occupying the space that was formerly Pier 2110, and Trump building a development around 110th Street and Central Park.

Then, there are the illusive rumors about a new Applebees in the space formerly occupied by Boma at Nubian Heritage, and a new Macy’s on 125th Street.

Most recently, we have been able to clear up a rumor that could have spread like wildfire.  The rumor was that the NYPL was relocating the Schomburg downtown.  It’s NOT going to happen.  They just spent a boatload of money to renovate the Schomburg, so it wouldn’t have made sense for them to pack up and move the collection out of Harlem.
