We’ve been following the situation in Brooklyn with Amy Ruth’s losing their space in the historic Gage and
Tollner location. Now it seems that the Harlem location is facing their own problems. A tipster sent the following this afternoon:
I noticed Amy Ruth’s closed today and than this saw this:

I know and like the owner at Amy Ruth’s so I don’t want to hurt his business but thought this was interesting.
Interesting indeed. Some of the violations seems pretty standard, while others like the plumbing, permits, and signage cause me to wonder when the inspectors last visited the establishment.
Any thoughts on this issue?

I believe he sold it to Michael Vann (an African-American) who previously had interests in Sharkbar and Mecca restaurants.

That restaurant in Englewood NJ you are referring to is now also closed.

Carl Redding was the founder of the restaurant which he opened in 1998. He sold it last year and opened a branch in NJ which hasn’t had the same rave reviews as the Harlem restaurant, This is what we posted last year:

What does the headline supposed to imply? Now they’re… who are the people who are supposed to be after Amy Ruth’s? Is it the health department or is this another headline from uptown flavor pointing the finger to gentrifiers again? Which of course always has racist overtones. How about a headline like “Amy Ruth’s needs to clean up their act?” – much more accurate – don’t you think Uptown?

Amy Ruth’s is my favorite place for soul food. And, I’m not a Harlem native. I travel from lower Manhattan to get there. I wish their restaurant all the best and hope they can resolve these issues. Sounds like some city inspector wants a payoff.
