When Opportunity Knocks

The barber chairs didn’t arrive on time, so husband-and-wife team Vylmary and Eustace Bennett won’t open J. Styles’ Opportunity Cuts Barber Shop Monday as planned.

Eustace is hoping the doors at 212 E.122nd St. will swing open Saturday.

When they do, it will be a personal triumph for the Bennetts, but also a huge kudo for Mayor Bloomberg‘s poverty-fighting Opportunity NYC program, which will mark its first anniversary next month.

Linda Gibbs, deputy mayor for Health and Human Services, said the Bennetts are one of 2,400 families, with a total 5,400 children, enrolled in the Opportunity NYC pilot program. They were selected from six city communities – two in the Bronx, two in Harlem, one in East New York and one in Brownsville, Brooklyn – where 30% to 40% of residents live at or below the national poverty level.
