Comedian and Chicago native Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning from complications due to pneumonia, his publicist confirmed.
Mac, 50, had been hospitalized for about a week at Northwestern Hospital, according to his spokeswoman. A few years ago, Mac disclosed that he suffered from sarcoidosis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in tissue, most often in the lungs.

It was a big shock by the time I heard about his death. I mean really, I couldn’t believe it. It’s sad to know a loss of a person that had success in his life, a very incredible person.
Very talented and funny.
He was one of my favorites comedians but I never thought he had suffered of Sarcoidosis, which it’s a very complicated disease as far as I know. Though he now is in a better place with God.

A lot of these comedians have serious personal issues, but Bernie is one of those with his head on completely straight. I’m sorry to hear of his passing since he was an example for the next generation of upcoming comedians. Reminds me of when Robin Harris passed. If you haven’t watched Harlem Nights recently you might want to rent it and check out that fantastic line up of comic genius. Crazy!
