Yes anon! – agree completely 100%. Anderson Cooper from CNN detailed the no snitching bs culture and he interviewed a prominent rap star (I forget who he was) and Anderson had great questions like “if you knew a 10 year old girl next door was being molested would you say something?” and the idiot rapper said “no, it ain’t my business”
That basically sums up this disgusting backward practice. Senator Perkins, Wright, Councilman Jackson and the horrible Sharpton have yet to speak out against this practice. This should be the number one issue they should be tackling. That and gang/gun violence. Period.

i think one thing we all need to notice is that this woman’s last column was called “A White Woman Explains Why She Prefers Black Men.” so i think James’ assessment of “fetishizing blackness” is absolutely on target. she thought she would run around and forget all the rules about protecting yourself and get away with it because she likes sleeping with black men and that shows how open minded and liberal she is. well that’s not the way the world works, lady, and if you act a fool, then sometimes people take advantage of you.
it’s like she thinks she needs to act like she’s “down” but in the process she’s just acting like an idiot. but she still lives in the big bad city so im not sure how she survived this long to be honest.
having said all of that, this no snitching shit has got to end, not because of this lady, but because of the black children of this city getting gunned down day after day and no one doing a damn thing about it. that’s just sad and if our leaders had any courage they would put aside all of their stupid disagreements and start to tackle this issue.

Any person with half a brain, whether they be black or white, would never call that the “real Harlem.” Why don’t you try attending the community board meetings or the 129th St. Block Assocation meetings – you’ll soon see that no one considers these gang shootings to be the real Harlem. Those who have lived on 129th between Lenox and 5th for the past 20, 30 or 40 years are outraged by the actions of those idiots who shot those people. We don’t call it “keeping it real.”

Yup thuggery is thuggery, but please read her description of the “mugging” carefully. Who in the hell gets mugged by their “hair dresser?” Someone who obviously got involved in something waay over her head, thought her being a sexually available white woman would protect her, and instead got smacked down. Again, the violence is not being advocated, but this is not a case of naieviety, rather she was doing some shady shit that she had previously gotten a pass on. Now she writes an incredibly self serving article that demonizes Harlem and we’re supposed to feel sorry for her. Its people like this woman who make it harder for the rest of us to live peacibly in Harlem. I’ve said it before…if you come to harlem to buy drugs, fetishize Blackness or otherwise act the fool…you are going to get a very rude awakening.

I am a black man and have been living in Harlem for over 25 years. It is deplorable what happened to this woman and our community should be ashamed. Thuggery is thuggery and racism is racism, whether black or white, and it is a serious problem in our community. There is no excuse.
Social codes are no excuse. What happened to this woman is inexcusable no matter which point of view you look at it from. And, as a black man, I personally resent the earlier poster’s implication that black social codes are so uncivilized.
It is high time we take a look at our own community (or lack thereof) with the same level of scrutiny that we apply to whites. And it’s past time that we recognize that there is something wrong with our culture that we seriously need to change.

There is complete truth in the NYP article. No matter how naive this woman was NO ONE deserves to be assaulted. NO ONE. Harlem will NEVER change if people like her assailant aren’t dealt with.
Are you friggin kidding me? Some of these posts are revolting. She states the obvious – whites and gentrification are ONLY a friggin scapecoat for the crap that the community has always gotten themselves into.
You know what will happen next? St. Nick’s Pub will close and blame white people for moving into the neighborhood and not going there. BULLSHIT! Copelands tried the same thing. These remarks are blatantly racists against whites. YES. Against whites – there is such a thing!
Harlem’s change is needed and will continue because an international city like NYC will not put up with it. Thugs MOVE out or better yet – please GO TO prison and stay there!

I also read that “article” in the NYPress and was revolted by it. As a white man I have to say that it cannot unchallenged for another white person to come to Harlem and expect the red carpet to be rolled out for them. I never blame the victim in the event of a crime, but in this case, she got exactly what was coming to her dumbass. Furthermore, her final analysis of the situation shows exactly the gamut of “I love Black people” sentiment till some shit goes down then its all “they get exactly what they deserve.” Harlem deserves a more nuanced treatment, even though most people wont get it, so shame on the NYPress for even printing such a fucking smear job.

narmer—you read my mind. i wonder who will end up getting those loans? usually it ends up being an inside deal and the people who really need it never get it.
and it could be me, but ever since the bottom fell out the lending market it feels ot me like most of the 125th rezone has gone into slow motion or stop. lots of empty store fronts recalling the harlem days of old. and it’s not a welcome sight.

Re NY Press, I smell BS, this woman was assaulted and she knows her attacker, and the cops wont go after him, in short BS. What the thugs are learning is that new comers do not play the ‘no snitching’ game and will call 911 when they see something. The thugs know the rules are changing, Harlem is not as lawless as it once was. What is deplorable are those that seem to rejoice in every act of violence.

129th St. between 5th and Lenox. Absolutely no long time Harlem resident is surprised, but what about those ‘upscale’ fancy shmancy condo buyers of The Lenox on 129th & Lenox’?
You paid upwards of $600K and you chose to buy on a tenement lined block with a 40 year legacy of drug dealing. I could not believe people with the means to finance expensive condos were also so stupid to buy on a lousy crime plagued block across the street from a 24 hour laundrymat…but they were.
So just past midnight there was a multiple shooting, bullets sprayed, bodies down on the ground, blah blah blah. Well on 129th between Lenox and 5th, that’s just another day, comes with the territory, that’s how they get down there, they’re “keeping it real”. Real Harlem.
Perhaps Nellie Bailey is proud this morning that at least for one Black, real Harlem has proudly shown it’s colors and reflected Harlem life before gentrification.

to bad this did not happen to her first night in Harlem, then she would not have had to write this horrible, one sided garbage. she is just retelling a fantasy she had for the ‘hood and black man that turned into a nightmare for her. she broke many social codes that make me assume she does not come from an urban enviroment, nor diverse surroundings.
this is the point when most whites flee and turn and what they say they love(harlem) she runs and wants to blame thugery and she does not want to deal with the problems of a community. she now just wants to wrap a culture and generation of young black man into thugs. her whole time in Harlem was fake and superficial; and people can read that stuff a mile away, cause people are not gonna pay mind to some skinny white legs as she would like you to think.
this is just a run of the mill story full of prejiduce and ignorance and reads nothing genuine.
some might say i just living my own romantic-white-liberal fantasy, but as someone said on this blog u have to look from a different cultural perspective then your own. so, seeing my friend trapped in the prison system since age 13 to 28, losing an 18 yr friend with his brains on the sidewalk and a friend serving 40 years in prison for shooting some one in the ghetto. i know their lives are more than just “thuglife” it is much deeper and complex, but to discuss those issues takes work, thinking and interaction, qualites this lady lacks.
