Tour Harlem by Cell Phone

Posted on July 14, 2008 by

What do you do when people come from out of town but you can’t get time off from work? You tell them to charge up their cell phone, help them buy a Metro Card and send them on their merry way with a hardy wave and a cheery command to “Have fun!”

The West Harlem Art Fund offers FREE cell phone tours of Harlem. The tours are in English and French, with a Japanese version to come in August.

The tours guide visitors and “new-comers” alike through the streets of Central and West Harlem – extending from Lenox Avenue to 12th Avenue — through a series of prompts. Savona Bailey-McClain, Executive Director of the West Harlem Art Fund, offers history and commentary about the areas featured on the tour. For more information visit myharlem.org

Ed. Note: I recommend that you use a good ear piece with your phone if you will be walking around the neighborhood using the tour. Maybe it was just my phone but the audio sounded a bit hollow or tinny. I found it a little difficult to follow along even though I wasn’t outdoors while listening to the recording. Your thoughts?
