Call to Artists: 180th Street Subway Project

Posted on May 31, 2008 by

MTA Arts for Transit seeks to review images of artists’ past work for consideration for a commission to create public art for the East 180th Street station along the White Plains Road Line.

Artists’ packages will be reviewed by a selection panel and
finalists will be selected to create site-specific proposals.
Approximately one percent of the construction budget for
the station is allocated for the design and fabrication of
permanent artwork.

The East 180th Street station, located next to Morris Park Avenue, is an elevated station with two island platforms and three tracks. The platforms connect to the historic station house, which once served the old New York, Westchester and Boston Railway

The commissioned artist will create designs that will be reproduced into two mediums: faceted or laminated glass for windows and glass mosaic for walls. The artwork will be located along the walls of the corridors between the platform and the historic station house. Because approved fabricators will be translating the selected artwork into glass, artists’ prior experience with this material is not required.

PROJECT BUDGET
The budget for the design and fabrication of the artwork for this station is approximately $150,000. The budget includes an artist fee of approximately 20% of the final art project budget. As part of this fee, the selected artist will be required to submit a budget, produce completed designs, and oversee the fabrication and installation of the artwork.

AWARDING OF PROJECT
Four finalists will be selected based on the quality and appropriateness of the images reviewed. Finalists will be given site specifications and a detailed overview of the project to create a proposal for original artwork for the station. An honorarium of $750 will be paid for each proposal. Only one artist will be commissioned for this station.

MTA ARTS FOR TRANSIT PERMANENT ART PROGRAM
Metropolitan Transportation Authority
Arts for Transit commissions public art that is seen
by hundreds of thousands of city-dwellers as well
as national and international visitors who use the
subway and commuter rail system.

As the MTA rehabilitates subway and commuter
rail stations through its Capital Program, it uses a
portion of the funds to install permanent works of
art. Through the Permanent Art Program, Arts for
Transit creates links to neighborhoods with art that
echoes the architectural history and design context
of the individual stations.

Artists are chosen through a competitive process
that uses selection panels, comprised of visual arts
professionals and community representatives, which
review and select artists.
