Interested in your child becoming part of a beautiful work of art for a landmark venue? Grandma’s Place, Harlem’s one and only black-owned toy and bookstore, is hosting a picture day for children ages 8 and under. These beautiful, professional photographs will be transformed into a delightful mural that will make Grandma’s Place even more of a magical, kid-friendly place than it already is. Have your child become part of a historical moment in a truly lasting way. And it’s free! Local photographer Bryant Mack will be taking pictures Sunday, May 18, 2008, from 9am to 12pm.
“Grandma’s Place is a children’s toy and bookstore known for its nostalgic toys and self-esteem-enhancing books,” says friendly store manager Dennys Franklyn. “All the toys promote motor skills, personal interaction and self development [as opposed to] children just watching something on TV or robotically playing an electronic game.”
A “teacher’s teacher” who originally founded Grandma’s Place in 1999 as an intergenerational literacy center, Dawn Harris-Martine has since expanded this treasure in this Harlem community to include products that are at once educational and multicultural.
“Everyone should come in and see themselves reflected in the store and as part of a mosaic,” says the beloved educator. “We have Asian, Hispanic, Korean, white, and African dolls because that’s the reality of this neighborhood…it’s very important that [children] can come to a place where they can see their faces shining out at them.”
A free event, the photo shoot presents an opportunity to forever be a part of Grandma’s Place as surely as a profound love for education and for children have a permanent place in her heart. Save the date: Sunday May 18, 2008, from 9am to 12pm.
