News from a UF reader came across our desks that Sugarhill Java & Tea had closed yesterday on Easter Sunday. I for one am quite saddened by this news. It seems their website is already down. Is there anyone else who can confirm the status of Sugarhill Java & Tea out there?
If this news is indeed true I would like to thank the folks at Sugarhill Java & Tea for serving our community with such professionalism and courtesy. You will truly be missed!

This business was poorly run. I don’t understand how they could charge almost as much as starbucks yet their coffee was awful. It is a shame because their decor was nice. But Starbucks opening and now a Dunkin Donuts on the way on the corner of 145th and St. Nicholas it was bound to happen. Maybe a nice wine store could go there.

I’m not surprised. I hardly saw the amount of folks needed in there to make a profit. If you want dedicated employees, you have to pay them a living wage; or hire students.
That area is a morning and evening place. If you open late and close early, you miss the prime time customers. Folks who are around during the day, ain’t spending like that.
And no, the area isn’t gentrified all like that; it’s still in transition. True gentrification will come when the aspirational middle-class can get over the look of their neighbors, to feel comfortable enough to walk freely around the area.

Actually they do that in the summertime but I notice they have a high turnover rate when it comes to keeping dedicated employees. Also, another problem they face (that I called from day one) is the fact that they open so late and close so early. They never really stood a chance against the competition.

Aww, that’s too bad. I wish I had the time to pop in there more often, it’s so nice inside. If they had someone selling coffee out front in the morning, they could catch people before they reach the new (not open) Dunkin D’s at the subway station.

they are considering closing the business if they are unable to sell it, but I dont think its closed for good just yet.

It wasn’t open yesterday (Easter Sunday). I know because I went there for breakfast and had to leave hungry. Today I walked by and it looked closed, but the electronic sign said they were still open.
