A hundred years ago, in communities across the U.S., white residents forced thousands of black families to flee their homes. Even a century later, these towns remain almost entirely white. BANISHED tells the story of three of these communities and their black descendants, who return to learn their shocking histories.

Powerful. I grew up in the south and experienced church burnings and house burnings thoughout my childhood. If a Black man built a house that was too big or too nice, it often burned down mysteriously—this practice happened as late as the 80s in some communities and as we know, a rash of church burnings again swept across the south only a few years ago. All of this needs to be documented.

I cannot express in words how impactful this documentary is. I had the privilege of watching its debut at Film Forum and got to meet Marco during the QA session that followed. Not only are the stories powerful but the role that the documentarian played in this piece was so amazing! Put it on your TIVO’s and DVR’s ASAP! You will not regret it.
