Well folks, the Apollo is going to close in January of 2010. Relax, relax! It’s not what you think. It’s going to close for nine months while the place undergoes a significant expansion. Here are the stats! It’s going to add 4,000 square of feet of space mostly by moving around a lot of the office space and converting it into “usable” space. I’m guessing by “usable” they mean directly related to the performance events as opposed to administrative space. The whole project is expected to cost $96 million bucks, $51.5 million of which has already been raised…just another 40 mil or so to go and we’re good to go! The press is talking about it! Interestingly enough, according to NYMag the Apollo takes credit for the success of Wyflef Jean! Read more…(NYT) (NYPost) (AMNY)
And here’s a question I have for any faithful UF readers out there! Do you have any stories (or someone you know) of going up on stage during one of the amatuer night performances at the Apollo?
