Join the Central Park Conservancy for a fresh alternative to the tired old happy hour scene at this exciting monthly series for young professionals held at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center!
This month, we partner with El Museo del Barrio to celebrate Valentine’s Day and honor the birthday of East Harlem’s renowned poet Julia de Burgos with an evening of poetry featuring Latina poet Alma Villegas.
Alma Villegas has performed her poetry and been featured as an actress in Puerto Rico, New York, and England. Since 1993, she has been performing in “Julia de Burgos: Un canto a la verdad sencilla” (song of the simple truth), a poetry performance created by Alma that includes music, modern dance, and songs. From 1992 to 1994, Ms. Villegas was the Artistic Director of Café Teatro Julia de Burgos in East Harlem.
Alma Villegas was also the Executive and Artistic Director of Música Against Drugs, Inc. from 1996 to 2000, where she created an art program and opened the Teatro Galeria Manny Maldonado, for which the main goal was to serve the Puerto Rican/Latino community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in their struggle against drugs and AIDS.
Ms. Villegas’ presentation will include readings from the works of Julia de Burgos, one of the foremost poets to come out of Puerto Rico in the first half of the twentieth century.
After the presentation, audience members are encouraged to participate in an open mic session. Bring a favorite poem, or one that you wrote, to share!
