NPR profiles Carmen McRae; Harlem native (b. 1922), singer and pianist. Actually, NPR calls her a “song stylist,” which for some reason conjures up images of Kanye West for me. I guess he would have been sampling spirituals and chain gang songs.

Did you know that Dougie Fresh (Harlem native) has six sons and two of them have a rap group? I didn’t know that. Some of these rap pioneers are getting up there in age. Pretty soon we should be getting some rapping grandchildren.

You may have seen on the news recently that video of teenage girls beating up a man in a subway car. The Harlem teen who shot the video says it’s not staged, but police and others are not sure.
