Going really soon!!! “Stereotypes and Humantypes”

Posted on October 26, 2007 by

There are just 2 days left til the end of the “Stereotypes and Humantypes:Images of Blacks in the 19th and 20th Centuries” exhibition at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. This is another fine presentation by the prestigious institution. It’s full of memorabilia from the late 1800′s when african americans were portrayed as “pickaninnies”, “mammies”, and “coons”. These were the images used in all sorts of advertising for everything from tobacco to food products. It follows the trends in “blackface” musicals and “minstrel shows” of the time. It also juxtaposes the ignorance of the time with photographs of REAL african-americans of the time: professionals, pastors, actors, nurses. As a bonus there’s a short-film about african-american women and the pressures of self-image. I cannot convey how important an experience this is. The setup is very efficient. I actually managed to get the whole thing done during my lunch hour. And it’s free! Only a couple days left! Tarry not!
