This Thursday, Columbia will host a free outdoor screening of the AfroReggae documentary Favela Rising. The film follows Anderson Sá, who, spurred by the injustices thrust upon his impoverished community, acted out in an unexpected way — by forming Grupo Cultural AfroReggae.
From the movie’s website: “Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.”
The screening will be preceded by a samba party, which begins at 8 p.m.
Location: Hamilton Lawn, off 116 St. and Broadway

A very good movie. Music does tame the Outlaws.
