ashe – To make manifest into being. To claim a thing is so; and so it is.
aSHè is a weekly hour-long radio talk show on WHCR 90.3 FM (the official radio station for the City College of New York/CUNY). The show’s purpose is to inspire and empower audiences through entertainment. It is much more than an arts and entertainment talk show. aSHè explores a wide range of issues affecting urban communities and the country-at-large from a solution-oriented perspective. aSHè’s engaging format features two veteran radio professionals: Moniifa Mah’t and Shawn Sherri Seymour. The talented team approach current events, spicy topics, and entertainment news with a style that leaves listeners with the feeling that they have just eavesdropped on a private conversation of girlfriends at play.
With their own keen insights, the ladies of aSHè pack a double punch of talk and humor. They cover the hottest topics in the social, cultural, political, and economic spectrum. For the past several years, the show has attracted esteemed guests such as Kevin Powell, Queen Afua, Camille Yarborough, Oba Babatunde (WB’s Half and Half), Maurice Hines (of Broadway’s Hot Feet), Lisa Gaye Hamilton (formerly of ABC-TV’s The Practice), and many others.
When not in the WHCR studio, Moniifa and Shawn take the show to the streets with the aSHè Live version of the program. The hosts broadcast from events throughout New York City and beyond. Whether its panel discussions, seminars, book parties, soirees, cultural events, talent shows, or live broadcast show, the show stays on purpose with the community it serves.
aSHè was originally created by Moniifa after her seven year role (early 1990’s) as Senior Producer of the GBE (Imhotep Gary Byrd’s Global Black Experience) – one of the most popular black radio talk shows in New York City during that time. Shawn, a radio professional in her own right, worked as a reporter for WBAI Radio/Pacifica Network (as well as a guest DJ for Jammin 105, now Power 105 FM). Opinionated, charismatic, and just plain funny, the “sisters in spirit” grew up in Hempstead, Long Island but they both now reside in Harlem, New York. Both Moniifa and Shawn share a background in the performing arts, having both performed in off-Broadway musicals, on television, in movies, and more.
