Women’s Symposium at the Schomburg

I was listening to Jean Parnell this morning on WHCR-FM, who had a guest on her weekly talk show detailing a women’s symposium at the Schomburg next Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. What makes the location ideal is the fact that Schomburg currently has an exhibit about Stereotypes on view. Details about the conference and exhibit are below:

When Did We Lose It? How Do We Get It Back?

A Symposium on the Depiction of Black Women

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

On Tuesday, June 26, 2007, for the first time ever, leading Black Women organizations from the Greater New York and New Jersey areas will commence a series of symposiums for the purpose of challenging the collective silence, erosion of respect, human values, and its impact on Black America. The first of three symposiums titled: R-E-S-P-E-C-T – How Did We Lose it? How Do We Get It Back? will be held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located at 515 Malcolm X Boulevard at 135th Street, from 7:00:pm – 9:00 pm.

We have invited seven top thought-leaders and cultural influencers to serve as panelists in a moderated discussion to rouse greater community discourse on the diffusion of negative language and imagery about Black America. Moving beyond the particulars of the Don Imus flap, panelists are expected to share their perspective on the issue and to present recommendations that will identify approaches that need to be taken to create measurable impact as to how we can recapture more valued images.

A reception will be held from 6:00pm – 7:00pm, with C. Vivian Stringer, Coach, Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team, The Scarlet Knights, as our special guest. The Schomburg Center’s Exhibition on “Humantypes vs. Stereotypes”, which depicts mythical and real images of African Americans over centuries, will also be open for viewing.

When: Tuesday, June 26, 2007, 5:30pm – Reception & Exhibit: Stereotypes vs. Humantypes; 7:00pm – Symposium
