The Golden Age of Spanish-Language Cinema in El Barrio

In the era of the Spanish Civil War, East Harlem was a growing Latino neighborhood and home to two thriving Spanish-language movie houses whose programming included stage shows and films from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and the United States. James D. Fernandez, Director, King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, New York University, will give a view into the world of Spanish-language cinema of the late 1930s, followed by clips from movies screened at the Teatro Hispano and the Teatro Latino presented by Richard Peña, Program Director, Film Society of Lincoln Center. Presented in conjunction with Facing Fascism: New York and the Spanish Civil War. $
