While I do agree that the ubiquitous nature of fast food places in Harlem is quite a concern given the health complications that already acompany people of color. However, I do not think think that subsidizing supermarkets is the answer. I think that part of the city’s aggressive campaign on promoting better eating practices should be to use the tools of community based organizations and invest on educating the public. It should be in the way of encouraging healthy eating habits.

Subsidizing Supermarkets: Sheryl McArthy means well however fails to recognize where the buck stops and responsibility. This is seen with her statement “But healthy food is in short supply.”. No, Health Food is in low demand. One 116th & Lex you buy what you need to eat healthy and she should quit making excuses for people choosing to be undereducated and informed. I don’t know that Associated but I know 3 blocks is not too far to walk for your health and at FineFood at 116th and Lenox you an buy veggies galore – fresh, etc
Let’s be honest, I see the welfare class with their welfare ATM card or whatever that card is. I then look at their groceries, their choices, it’s pathetic. Much of the welfare class that makes the decision on what to buy their kids buy crap, total crap, no wonder the kids are bouncing off the walls and not in a healthy state of mind to study. Preprocessed, sugary crap.
Those with the buying authority have the power. Quit the excuses, hell my tax dollars are paying for those groceries, welfare is so abused by those receiving it, I support the WIC like programs wherein the welfare card could only buy fresh veggies & fruit, milk, juice, water, meat, etc. Nothing frozen, preprocessed (chips), etc. Basics, Wheaties or the like, not the latest sugar ceral, etc.
