The Columbia Spectator reports that Morningside Park is under consideration for scenic landmark status. The park was designed by the same team that collaborated on Central Park and Prospect Park. Proponents feel especially strong about protecting the park in the face of the impending Columbia expansion project.
Under the proposal, Morningside Park would be labeled as public-owned land of serious visual and historic importance. This would prohibit development within the park and mandate that it remain true to its original design. The city would also provide publicity for the park and its events, and the park would eventually be added to the national landmark register.

Morningside Park has been chopped up so much that it can not remain true to its original design.
There use to be part of a Fortress at 123rd and Amsterdam with a plaque indicating George Washington manned the battle of Harlem Heights from there. It was torn down and replaced by a School. Their use to be Cells for prisoners in the park that still had the iron shackles and chains. But with all of this destroyed, the historical importance of the park is gone.
