DOA coverDreams of Africa

Join us for a book celebration with Dr. Sylviane A. Diouf, Curator of Digital Collections, Schomburg Center and author of Servants of Allah: African Muslims Enslaved in the Americas. Her new book, Dreams of Africa in Alabama tells the story of 110 men, women, and children from Dahomey, on the west coast of Africa, who were brought ashore in Alabama on the slave ship the Clotilda in the summer of 1860, the year before the Civil War broke out and more than 50 years after the United States legally abolished the international slave trade. After emancipation, the group reunited from various plantations, brought land, and founded their own settlement, known as African Town. A book signing will follow the presentation.
