Last week we introduced a new category to UPTOWNflavor called The Stoop. The Stoop is where reader comments on the hottest topic of the week are highlighted.
What makes this week’s hot topic interesting is that it was originally posted in September of last year, but many of the comments have been posted recently. The topic: Cafe Largo Returns to Broadway. Amid a lot of back and forth about the reputation of the owner and the reason why the restaurant closed in the first place, there are some informative comments about the reopening after the jump. To read all of the comments click on the link above.
“The revamped Largo is slated to reopen beginning of April. I am fortunate enough to live just 2 blocks away so i have been following up the rebuilding process quite closely. I for one was extremely grateful when Largo first opened its doors a couple years ago.” -Hugo
“Tres Pesos and Vinegar Hill Gourmet are now open. Great news for the neighborhood!!! -JL
“Along with the reopening of Largo, two new business were added right next door to it. One is Tres Pasos, a tex-mex takeout place and Vinegar Hill which is a bread market and gourmet eatery. Tres Pasos and Vinegar Hill made their debut this Monday. Cafe Largo itself will reopen in April according to the owner. That’s just a little background on everything.” -Hugo

As for Vinegar Hill the real problem may just be that they are employing locally and not training their staff correctly.
I live down the block and was very happy to see Vinegar Hill open however the staff are really in need of some serious training.
The other night when I went in the male employees where having a very loud and crude conversation that would have scared off anyone interested in a Veggie Grill specialty sandwich.
Then I went home and ordered one of their Meatlovers brick oven pizzas only to have it delivered upside down, what a mess!!!
Vinegar Hill has great eats but it just isn’t going to work if you have the wrong technique or employees for that matter…

Raul,
I would like to know how people like you sleep at night. Everything you posted is false. Simply false.

I stopped in at Vinegar Hill today. The store fronts of all of three places are freakin’ gorgeous. Whoever made the design decisions has amazing taste. Similarly the inside of Vinegar Hill looks awesome. It’s great to see someone take care to make the space look great. I tried a mini meatloaf and a cinnamon bun. Both were delicious. I am genuinely proud to have these places opening up on the block. I will be a very loyal patron. I’m really excited to try cafe largo.

I have already been to Vinegar Hill and Tres Pesos a few times this week and love them both. The food is wonderful and the staff are extremely friendly, which is so rare to find nowadays. I’m counting the days until Cafe Largo returns.

To answer some of the questions posed…we will have a website as soon as the restaurant opens. We are in the process of submitting our menus and photos of the finished space to several websites. The reason we closed was to expand and renovate. There are many reasons why the renovation took longer than expected, too many to go in to. End result is that after a lot of hard work and patience, my husband and I have opened two of four spaces that we are proud of and we look forward to being a part of the community (a community in which my husband grew up in and holds dearly) for many years to come. Anyone with questions can email me directly at cafelargo@aol.com. Peace and be well.

“they closed to expand and ran into problems with the owner” does not strike as a credible unforseen matter causing a restaurant to be shut down 1+ years.
nonetheless the place got an ave. of 8.9 on citysearch

before closing and i am looking forward to giving them a try come April.

anon, if you click on the link to the original post you’ll see marc’s wife herself actually submitting a response to those charges. also, its closing was not meant to be “swept under thr rug” or anythign like that.they simply closed to expand and ran into problems with the owner of the property.

I used to live on Marc’s block and my roommates and I (a group of young black women) ate and ordered from Cafe Largo regularly. Marc and his family are wonderful people. They always made you feel welcome and like a part of their family whether you met them on the block or in the restaurant. Their business was a gem. It gave us a local place where we could congregate, eat and enjoy great music. I, for one, think what’s being said about Marc is totally wrong. He’s a great guy and whose worked tirelessly to make sure the neighborhood he loves continues to grow and proper.

I’m still not clear on why it ended up closing in the first place. Is that supposed to be an unspoken subject slept under the rug?
I’m willing to give any business a try, especially if they learned from their mistakes, however it’s mistake 101 to have publicity like this on UptownFlavor and not a website up. I wonder if they indeed have learned from their mistakes.
Is there a website? I would like to read the menu for example, read about their story, their self described style, etc. A restaurant has a lot to communicate about themeselves from their site and if they are opening in 40 days or so, their site should be up now, is it?
