“Music of the Heart” starring Meryl Streep was a film based on the true story of a single mother moving to Harlem in 1991 and founding a much needed music program. Opus 118, located at 103 East 125th Street, has come a long way from it’s fledgling days depicted in the movie. Today, the program has touched the lives of thousands of kids who otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience the gift of music using
real instruments.
In addition to the instrumental program, Opus 118 The Harlem School of Music, is adding an additional component. Beginning in March, they will be adding the Harlem Youth Chorus. Lorna Myers, the founder of the Girls Choir of Harlem and the Harlem Youth Chamber Ensemble, will be the director of the new choir. Youth between the ages of 10-13 will be afforded the opportunity to learn vocal skills, harmonization and perform as part of the ensemble. Participants practice twice a week for a total of 64 classes. The cost to parents? $50 a year or $25 for the remainder of this year. For more information about the school call Karen Geer, Dean of Programs at 212-831-4455 x102.
