Set in Washington Heights and running Off Broadway, the new musical “In the
Heights,” is like “Rent,” but without all the downers and set to a Latin beat. Centered around a bodega owner and his neighbors, Charles Isherwood says it has “the inspiriting flavor of a morning pick-me-up on a warm summer day.” Perfect for frigid weather or dateless weekends, especially since it also has a cast “full of energized, energetic performers you can’t take your eyes off and won’t want to,” and “joyous choreography, which synthesizes street styles and Broadway athleticism, showcasing the fabulously elastic bodies of the ensemble.” That should be hot enough to draw you in.
In the Heights,” at the 37 Arts Theater, 450 West 37th Street, (212) 307-4100.
