Are There Blipsters in Harlem?

Posted on February 2, 2007 by

With the buzz all over the Internet about black rockers a.k.a. “blipsters” I figured I could skate past the issue with relative ease. However, considering the Harlem’s foray into the blipster scene, I had to mention of the East Harlem skater boutique Everything Must Go! I’ve intended to write about them since they opened at the end of last year, so ther will be a more in-depth piece on Harlem’s skater culture in the near future. Until then, in the words of rapper Lupe Fiasco, “Kick, Push.”

Bahr Brown, an East Harlem resident whose Converse sneakers could be considered blipster attire, opened a skateboard and clothing boutique, Everything Must Go, in the neighborhood in October, to cater to consumers who, like himself, want to dress with the accouterments of indie rock: “young people who wear tight jeans and Vans and skateboard through the projects,” he said.

“Hip-hop has lost a lot of its originality,” said Mr. Brown of Everything Must Go, the East Harlem skateboard shop. “This is the new thing.”
