Soundz

Soundz Lounge
3155 Broadway between 123rd and 124th

(near Toast)

I try to stay away from places near Columbia because I’m just not into the Ivy League B.S. college scene anymore, but I was pleasantly surprised by Soundz. I met a couple of friends there during happy hour and had my fill of $3 Sam Adams. The bartenders were friendly and very responsive. The place seemed to fill up to a nice capacity without being shoulder to shoulder. The music was outstanding, everything from “Sexyback” to underground hits like Group Home’s “Up Against The Wall.” Supposedly this is a spot that a lot of teachers from the area go to, and for good reason – it’s a blast! They don’t serve food, but Toast is right next door so you can still get your English Burger on.

This place is the polar opposite of Soundz, but definitely fun. Suite 308 is unapologetically Black, from it’s location to the clientele it attracts. I had a drink here with my wife late one night and it was a lot of fun. Our cocktails were only about $8 each, which is not bad at all by NY standards (I’m not sure if they have a happy hour.) The music was at a nice level so that you can enjoy yourself but still hold a conversation without losing your voice. A tight dress code and a thorough pat down at the door is aimed at keeping the rowdies out. Definitely check this one out the next time you’re stumbling home from the 2/3 train.
