Making a rare New York appearance, Oumou Sangare is Mali’s great diva and one of the world’s greatest female vocalists. The best-known performer of the Malian popular music style known as Wassoulou, Sangare fronts an 11-piece band that draws on the sacred hunter’s music traditions of southern Mali. Known for lyrics that champion women’s rights supported by strong hypnotic grooves, Oumou Sangare is an icon in Mali and around the world. Also performing will be Cheikh Tairou M’Baye and Sing Sing Rhythms, an electrifying Harlem-based drum and dance company of Wolof griots that plays traditional Sabar music from Senegal.
