You know how when you walk into a clothing store with a few people in it? That weird feeling that you get when you know that the bored salespeople are going to pounce on you and try to shove any piece of crap down your throat? That’s the feeling that I have at plenty of Gamestops. I’m tired of being bombarded by the following:
“Hi, would you like to pre-order Madden?”
“Would you like a used DVD?”
“Would you like a strategy guide?”
“Would you like to put down X dollars for CD insurance?”
Harlem’s Gamestop on 125th St (near the Apollo) is one of the better branches that I have visited. I’ve rarely felt badgered while I’ve been there. They give you a little intro when you walk into the store, but that’s about it. They actually let you BROWSE and SHOP without trying to force you to buy whatever game they get the most margin off. The last time I went in, it was to pick up Trauma Center for the DS. The cashier actually expressed interest in the game and we had a short conversation about upcoming DS games, NOT to get me to pre-order them, but simply out of interest in being a gamer himself. That’s what’s missing from a lot of Gamestops these days.
By far the worst experience I’ve had was at the branch in Herald Square, when I was waiting on line and a Gamestop representative actually traversed the line asking if anyone wanted to preorder some PSP titles. Terrible.
