Authors Set to Shine in Harlem

woman_reading.jpgCreated to recognize the talents of African American writers, the African American Literary Awards Show is the brainchild of publicity and entertainment professional Yvette Hayward. The awards are sponsored by the likes of Black Expressions, Barnes & Noble and Time Warner imprints division. Established authors like Walter Mosley as well as new writers are publically selected for an AALAS Open Book Award. Nominations are open until September 11th. Awards will be announced on September 27th at the Alhambra Ballroom and the event will be hosted by Hill Harper.

The Up South International Book Festival will be taking place over the course of three days in the new home of the former Aaron Davis Hall, now known as Harlem Stage. This event celebrates the world culture “from the page to stage.” The festival will be attended by literary and public figures including Ruby Dee and Greg Tate. There will be panel discussions, workshops and performances by musicians like soul songstress Leela James and dancers including Ronald K. Brown. The book festival will run from September 29 to October 1st.
