If you’re looking for a place to stand around, then this is not your party, but if you’re looking for nonstop drum beats and a bass line that commands your body to move, then you’ve arrived at your desired location. Jump-N-Funk is the monthly, live-music tribute party to the Nigerian legend Fela Kuti. Fela’s music means a lot of things to different people, but one thing it will never be is dull. With DJ Rich Medina spinning all the hits that made Fela a classic, the only thing you’ll need is space as the crowd gets thick and the grooves get loud, you’ll realize how this party got its name.

The weather is beautiful and the Museum’s courtyard continues to be open for the Uptown Fridays! Program. This season is bound to get you moving! Dance to the sound of some of the hottest DJs spinning in NYC, connect with others during guided tours, or shop til’ you drop in the Museum’s newly stocked store. Bring a friend and have a cocktail and conversation. But…whatever you do…don’t miss these fun and festive evenings of culture in Harlem!

And don’t miss Hoofers’ House from 7-8:30 pm: in honor of the important place of tap dancing in Harlem’s history, SMH now serves as a new home for hoofers. Normally Tap dancers—elders and young people alike—are invited to take the floor at these quarterly jam sessions but this summer we will showcase the fine footwork of a selected few dancers that are slated to burn up the floor!

Uptown Fridays! with Hoofers’ House is $7 (general public), $5 (members, seniors and students) Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OTHER UPCOMING PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Vital Expressions in American Art: Performance at the Studio
BURNT SUGAR, THE ARKESTRA CHAMBER

Free with Museum admission
You will not want to miss this rare evening of performance featuring writer/guitarist/producer Greg Tate’s band Burnt Sugar, which explores the connective tissue binding jazz, rock, funk, twentieth century composition, and African music in a lyrical, seductive, exploratory, improvisational manner.
